When to Retire Your Cooling System

The ideal time to officially shut down your AC is when overnight temperatures consistently stay below 10∘ C (usually around early to mid-October). While it's wise to keep the system available through Thanksgiving just in case, plan your official shutdown once the cold weather begins to settle.

Triple-Layer Safety: The Critical Step

The single most important step is cutting all power to the outdoor unit. This prevents the system from accidentally trying to turn on during a cold snap, which can severely damage the compressor when the refrigerant oil is too cold.

  • Turn Off the Thermostat: Set your thermostat to "Off" or switch from "Cool" to "Heat."

  • Flip the Disconnect: Find the grey disconnect box mounted near the outdoor unit and flip the switch to "Off."

  • Find the Breaker: Go to your main electrical panel and switch the dedicated AC breaker to the "Off" position. This double layer of safety is highly recommended by HVAC pros.

Cleaning and Covering Protocol

A quick clean and proper covering will protect the unit from leaves, debris, and winter precipitation.

  • Clean the Condenser: Clear away leaves and debris from the base. Gently rinse the condenser fins with a low-pressure garden hose. Allow the unit to dry completely before covering.

  • The "Cover Question" Answered: Avoid full, non-breathable plastic covers, which trap moisture and promote rust or attract rodents looking for shelter.

    • Best Practice: Use a breathable, HVAC-specific cover that fits snugly.

    • Alternative: If you are worried about falling ice or snow damage, use a rigid, non-porous cover (like a piece of plywood) placed only on the top of the unit, leaving the sides open for ventilation.

  • Final Indoor Step: Change the air filter in your furnace/air handler. A fresh filter prevents trapped dirt from breeding mildew all winter long.

As your AC winds down, your heating system is about to take the spotlight.
